What is Image Automask?

Automask Image technique creates grayscale mask from original image and performs selected action and method through newly created mask. All actions performed through mask use brush parameters, in the same way as drawing directly onto canvas. If bump feature is checked, bumping is performed, otherwise intensity calculation through the mask is performed prior to pixel rendering.

Automask simple drawing

Here is an example of Automask Image action usage, together with texture, applied on simple drawing. Click on some image on the left side to enlarge.

  1. Create a new white image of size 400x400 pixels.
  2. Set brush type to 2-solid brush, size to 6, in Brush effects, check blur kernel and set it to 3. Brush bumping must be unchecked and all other parameters must be set to their default values.
  3. Select action: 1. Draw.
  4. Make some free hand drawing with foreground color set to
    black: RGB = (0,0,0).
  5. After drawing is finished, select some texture, Color scheme must be set to Texture Aligned and invoke Automask Image action. Use all channels equal with grayscale factor of 33% and click OK. A new image is created (the second image on the left).
  6. To bump image onto some texture, start again from some drawing or press undo if you have created image from previous step.
  7. Select another texture. This time check Bump scale and set it to value 2. Set direction of bumping to -1, 1 and set all other bump parameters to 0 and repeat step 5. Now, it looks like someone used a knife to write this love message onto wood.
  8. The fourth image is created in the same way as previous one, but instead of seamless wood texture, a seamless bark texture is used.

Automask grayscale image

As B&W photography is already a kind of grayscale mask, we will first start with this example. Grayscaling factor is only used to give some bias amount to image-mask. First, we will see how to bump image onto given texture.

  1. Open some existing B/W photography.
  2. You can perform some action to whole image prior to bumping (median, blur, etc..)
  3. Select some desired seamless texture.
  4. Select Draw action with normal mode and set Color scheme to Texture Aligned.
  5. Go to brush settings, check bump scale and set it to 2,5. Set direction to -1, 1 and set all other bumping parameters to 0.
  6. Set brush capacity to some desired value (70% - 100%).
  7. Invoke Automask Image and set grayscale factor to some value (33% - 70%) using all channels equal grayscaling. Press OK. Image will be bumped onto texture.

Examples of grayscale image automask

  1. Bump gs1 is created using marble texture directly to original image. Bump scale is set to 2,5 and brush capacity to 80%. Grayscale factor is set to 33%.
  2. Bump gs2 is created using cork texture with previously blurred image (3x3) with wrap option. Bump scale is 2,5 and brush brush capacity 80%. Grayscale factor is 60%.
  3. Bump gs3 is created using marble texture with previously blurred image (3x3) with wrap option. Bump scale is set to 2,5 and brush capacity to 100%. Grayscale factor is set to 60%.
  4. Bump gs4 is created using marble texture with previously filtered image (Median 7x7) with wrap option. Bump scale is set to 4 and brush capacity to 100%. Grayscale factor is set to 33%.

In these examples, speaking in 3D rendering terms, grayscale mask is used as height field for calculating light intensity for image bumping. When we unchek bump feature, bumping is not perform. In this case texture pixels intensity is varied according to grayscale mask pixel values [0,255]. Images Intensity gs1, gs2 are created with same steps as in previous example, except, this time, bumping is unchecked, capacity is set to 100%.

  1. Intensity gs1 is created using cork texture. Action Color Twist->Go to B& White previously applied on image (once). Bump scale is unchecked. Grayscale factor is set to 33% . Action used: Draw->Normal
  2. Intensity gs2 is created using two different textures. Bump scale is unchecked. Grayscale factor is set to 33%. Automask is applied four times onto first texture (leaves) using action: Draw-Higher. Automask is applied three times onto second texture (basket) using action: Draw-Lower. Image is then enhanced with action: Color Twist->Cast colors more.

The second example can be created without automasking as well. You can select leaves texture and apply drawing to complete image with draw-higher and then change texture and apply draw-lower on complete image.

Automasking color image

Automasking color images is similar to automasking grayscale images, but now you can perform automask grayscaling with separate channels adjustment and you can also set some color restrictions to obtain desired result.

Examples of color image automask

Intensity c1 image on the left side demonstrates automasking without bumping using simple draw-normal action with texture aligned in combination with color restriction. Seamless flower pattern is used.

  1. As background of image is mostly green colored, we will set restriction to green channel maximum with epsilon value set to 0.
  2. Invoke automask, select custom grayscaling and set channels grayscale factors to: R= 80%, G= 33%, B=33%. Press OK button.
